Money Or Motivation – Who Wins?
This week we saw some of the highest paid employees in Britain at work - footballers. When you are recognised as the best in the business and paid a high salary, it would seem sensible that your employers, shareholders and customers would see you perform better than anyone else out there.
However, this weekend we saw what can happen if well motivated, enthusiastic and determined juniors, volunteers and part timers take on people with better skills, but less motivation and drive. The FA Cup and Scottish Cup always throw up some surprises, but do they offer us any lessons about how teams work?
Nuneaton Borough, Burton Albion, Clyde and even Leicester City took on teams who are universally recognised as far better, and who have had more training and investment, with every resource they require on tap all the time.
Clyde, a team assembled in a hurry this summer from teenagers released as not good enough for other football clubs, beat Celtic, one of Scotland’s two footballing super-powers hands-down. Celtic’s top player, Roy Keane did reportedly take a 50% pay cut (down to £45,000 per week) to join Celtic. Clyde’s highest earner is on £350 per week.
The underdogs did well this week, and they are not realistically expected to carry on doing so right the way through to the finals, but they gave us a glimpse of what great management and great coaching can do with good raw material (and what can go wrong with excellent raw material).
As in football, great business teams can be developed without hiring in new and expensive talent from elsewhere. Home grown teams can display a commitment and passion for success that a team assembled from established people from elsewhere simply cannot deliver.
